black spot

A black smudge on a piece of paper used by pirates as a pronouncement of judgement. A black spot is often accompanied by a written message specifying a ruling, typically a death sentence, and placed in the hand of the accused. The term was created as a literary device created by Robert Louis Stevenson for his novel Treasure Island in 1881.
