buckler
buckle
A small often rounded shield held in one’s fist to protect against an opponent’s sword. The buckler could also be used to strike a blow to an opponent’s face. The term is derived from "buclier" the French word for shield. From this term arose the romanticized "swashbuckler." Bucklers were quite common, though they are rarely portrayed in present day media.
