Lowther was a British pirate active in the Caribbean and the Carolinas. He turned pirate after he mutinied as 2nd mate of the slave ship Gambia Castle, stealing the ship while the captain was ashore. In the Carolinas he developed a reputation for ramming other ships before his men pillaged them. Lowther's lietenant was Edward Low who he granted command of a ship in their fleet before Low left to Captain his own fleet. Lowther was said to haven died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound though news reports were conflicted about the timing. One report says he shot himself in January 1724, but other reports from June of that year report he previously escaped and then was nearly captured again only to be found dead by self inflicted gunshot wound.
