A unit of liquid measurement equal to 1/2 cup in the US and 5 ounces in England. Royal Navy sailors received a daily ration (known as a tot) of a 1/2 gill of rum, served in what became known as a gill cup. Thus, a gill cup holds 2.5 ounces of rum.
