Admiral Edward Vernon

An English naval officer who, in the 1740's, introduced diluting the sailors' half pint rum ration with one quart of water. He was knicknamed "Old Grog" because he was known to wear a grogram coat. He is also the namesake of George Washington's Mount Vernon.
